How dark can my window tint be?

BEAK Automotive · Updated November 7, 2026

The short answer

It depends on your state. Every US state sets its own limit as a minimum VLT (visible light transmission), and the strictest limits are almost always on the front side windows and the windshield. Rear side windows and the back glass are often allowed to be darker. Look up your state's current rule on your DMV or state police website before you choose a shade for the front.

What the numbers mean

VLT is the share of visible light that gets through: 70% film is barely tinted, 5% is limo dark. A state limit of, say, 35% means the window must let at least 35% of light through.

Factory glass counts too

Tint meters measure the glass and film together. Most car glass already blocks some light, so film on top ends up a little darker than its number: 35% film on glass that lets 80% through measures about 28%. If your state's limit is close to the shade you want, go one step lighter on the front doors.

What else states regulate

  • Front side windows: usually the strictest limit.
  • Windshield: usually only a strip at the top, above the AS-1 line marked on the glass.
  • Rear side windows and back glass: often allowed darker, sometimes any shade.
  • Reflectivity: some states limit mirror-like films.
  • Medical exemptions: several states allow darker tint with a doctor's note.

A common, often-legal setup

Many owners run a lighter shade (35%–50%) on the front doors and a darker one on the rear, or let factory privacy glass handle the back. A Front Sides kit is built for exactly that: just the driver and passenger windows.

The honest downsides

  • Laws change, and some states enforce them strictly. We can't give legal advice, so check your state's current rule before choosing a front-window shade.
